fun in the sun: a checklist to avoid beach day burnout

What to bring on your next beach trip to ensure a fun, easy and breezy day.

Sandcastles, swimming, beach volleyball. Everyone knows a day at the beach can be a lot of fun for the whole family. But it also has its challenges: Bugs, boredom, sand in all the wrong places. Sometimes all it takes is just one of these to go from beach bum to beach bummer. The key to a blissful day at the beach is preparation. We all know sunblock is a no-brainer, but packing these additional items in your bag should ensure your beach day is just another day in paradise.

  1. Games/Toys

Whether it’s a frisbee, a football, or sand toys and buckets, make sure your bag is stocked with entertainment for all ages in your group. Other than swimming and laying in the sun, there’s not much to do unless you bring your own fun.

  2. Baby Powder

We’ve all been there before—a day at the beach turns into months of finding random sand all over your car and in your house. Luckily, all you have to do is sprinkle baby powder on hands and feet, and rub, and the sand comes right off.

  3. Mosquito Repellent

Mosquitoes love the beach. You’ll be near water, sweating in the sun, and breathing heavier as you run along the beach, so mosquitoes will have your number. Find the right repellent for your family.

  4. A Willing Volunteer

It’s hard to believe there’s people out there who wouldn’t mind spending their beach day buried under the sand, but just in case, better make sure someone in your group is up for it. Who else will wear an elaborate sand-made mermaid costume if not your Uncle Eddie?

  5. Fitted Bed Sheet

We all love that warm breeze until it blows sand all over our towel and everything on it. Bring an old fitted sheet and set it up with heavy items in all four corners, such as your beach bag and a mini cooler. The result? A mini wall against free-flowing sand landing on you and your stuff—and a sheet that won’t blow away.

  6. Not-so-sporty Activities

Beach volleyball may be fun, but it’s not for everyone. For family and friends who would rather get crafty than sweaty, this super easy DIY kite is a fun beach day project that will keep beach boredom at bay.

  7. Flip Flops/Water Shoes

You may find yourself trapped on your towel if your feet are scared to brave the burning hot sand (or bumpy jagged rocks!). Be sure to bring a pair of flip flops or water shoes—something lightweight and that you won’t mind getting totally sandy.
