zika virus: what you need to know

Learn more about this mosquito-borne disease.

What is Zika Virus?

Zika virus is a disease spread primarily through mosquito bites that can cause fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis.

How can I avoid getting it?

There is no vaccine that prevents Zika virus. Using insect repellent containing Picaridin or DEET (like OFF! Deep Woods, which protects against mosquitoes that may carry the Zika virus) can help, as well as taking other precautionary measures such as wearing long sleeves and long pants, and putting screens in windows.

Where is it most common?

Outbreaks have historically occurred in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. In 2015 Zika virus was detected in the Americas for the first time. In December 2015, Puerto Rico reported its first confirmed Zika virus case. Zika virus is expected to continue to spread to new areas.

What are signs and symptoms?

About 1 in every 5 people infected with Zika virus show symptoms of being ill. Symptoms are usually mild, lasting from several days up to a week.

The most common symptoms of the Zika virus are:

  • fever
  • rash
  • joint pain
  • conjunctivitis
Other possible symptoms include: muscle pain, headache, pain behind the eyes, and vomiting.
